2013 Races Designated to Occur in Moab Utah

Roller Derby kicks off Moab’s competitive 2013 with Roller Derby bouts January 19, 2013. Watching the scrimmages will cost only $10 and be a fun-filled evening for a weekend visit to Moab’s Arches or Canyonlands National Parks in winter.

The Moab Red Hot 50k is produced by Grass Roots Events among snow dappled spires. The red sandstones poking out resemble smoldering embers creating the name of this challenging route in the Steel Bender region of Moab’s famous trails. Registration savings for participants signing up before October 10, 2012 for this February 16, 2013 Moab trail race.

March in Moab strikes up a mixture of sport events. Run Bike and Swim the Spring Mini Triathlon based out of the Moab Recreation and Aquatic Center. Log into the MRAC website to view times for the fall 2012 race results and better focus your training. Categories include a youth 13 and under aged athlete, fun for the entire family. Put the MRAC Attack on the calendar for March 2, 2013.

Road Cyclists break out of your wintry home places for the March 9-12 2013 Skinny Tire Festival. Participation benefits cancer research and survivor programs. The La Sal Loop Road was closed for construction much of 2012 and will be open and the best ever for this spring Skinny Tire Festival.

Canyonlands Half Marathon is a premier course among Utah races. This Moab half marathon includes the shorter 5k Utah racers and half marathon companions also enjoy.  Apply for the 2013 in the fall of 2012. Every applicant is entered into a lottery for 4000 entries. No race day registration for this highly revered Utah race. The lottery selection takes place in December. The race is held on March 16, 2013.

Gemini Adventures produces this endurance race on March 23 – 24 2013. There is running after dark so a light source in good working order must be carried by the ultra athlete. Hot food is provided through the night at Base Camp.

Trail Race
AMASA  offers 6.5, 9.5 mile races and offers a new to 2013 14.5 mile race. This race sells out fast. Race organizer is negotiating with the permitting land agency to expand it from the 100 participant maximum, however this is not for sure. April 13, 2013.

Adventure Racing in Moab kicked off with the premier of EcoChallenge in 1995. This 300 mile epic race influenced other race organizers like Primal Quest which held a 420 mile race in Moab in 2006. Regional weekend long adventure races have spread across America. Moab has enjoyed the 50+ mile Adventure Xstream Adventure Race now for 13 years. This April 13th 2013 race involves kayak, mountain bike, trail run, canyoneer, rappel and navigation in spectacular canyon landscapes.

5k Race NEW for 2013 in Moab
There will be heats for this ZOMBIE 5K on April 13, 2013. It is new to Moab: run, jump and evade at all costs to stay alive. Be a Zombi to chase or run for your life. For information contact Sean info@zombi5k.com 909-294-0856.

Drag Racing
New to Moab for 2013, taking place April 26 – 27, 2013, is Moab Drag Racing.

The Red Rock Relay is composed of 6 athletes per team, running the river to alpine loop road with determined interval lengths and support vehicle. This May 11 2013 event covers 70 miles and is open to only 300 teams. Team Captain gets a VIP surprise at race Check-in, so put a team together.

The Thelma & Louise Women’s Half Marathon races through the landscape of the outlaw heroines’ journey on June 1, 2013.  Register early to designate a bib name of either Thelma or Louise. This race benefits Girls on the Run and Seekhaven Family Crisis Center.

June 7-8 2013 the Rockwell Relay departs Moab for the back road sojourn to St. George by road cycling. This pedal competition takes 4 cyclists sharing 12 legs covering 516 miles.

There is a Moab Triathlon Festival in Moab on June 8 2013. Come experience XTERRA Moab (a National XPS Points Series event, Sport and Full distances), the Moab Road Triathlons (Sprint/Olympic), or the XTERRA Moab Trail Run. The amazing run course leading to Faux Falls and back is definitely one to remember.

Race Across the Sand (Desert R.A.T.S.) carrying your own pack of food, water, safety items and essential material. Distances each day vary from 9 miles to 52 miles for a total of 148 miles during this supported foot race on June 16- 22 2013 with Gemini Adventures.

Trail Race
MAS 50 Moab's Alpine to Slickrock crosses three mountain passes at or over 11,000 ft. Do you have the lungs to challenge this course? September 14, 2013.

Summer winds down as the Moab Century Tour rolls into town. Road cycling of 40, 65 or 100 mile rides over September 20-23 2013. Another fine event by Skinny Tire Events.

The Other Half Marathon covers another section of the scenic byway Hwy 128 apart from the Canyonlands Marathon route. This race finishes at the Sorrel River Ranch with food, music and microbrews. Race day is October 20 2013.

Moab Ho-Down Mountain Bike Festival has bike riding, dirt jumping, down hill mountain bike racing, a Bike Film Festival (sweet footage is always needed) and a ridiculously fun costume party. October 24 – 28, 2013.

Moab Trail Marathon
Project Athena adopted the sponsorship of this race in 2012. Registration opens January 14th for the November 2, 2013 races. Pick half marathon or marathon lengths or the fun 5K adventure run, prepare to get dirty.

The 2013 race season is completed with the Winter Sun 10K held on the first weekend of December, December 7, 2013 to be precise. Begin on a bench above the valley to arrive in the valley bottom for a great conclusion to the Moab Race Season 2013.

National Park Tours are as unique and varied as the 27,000 significant structures, 66,000 archeological sites or 115 million objects preserved and protected by the U.S. Department of the Interior in the National Park System. There are these points to consider with planning a visit to a National Park: Free Fee Days, Group Tours, online reservations and it can all start when a traveler gets a pass.

Currently the 12th Annual Photo Contest to select a winning photograph to be featured on the 2014 America the Beautiful Federal Recreation Land Pass is accepting snapshots of adventure and activity, or inspiration from historical locations, or depictions of America’s wildlife or a treasured federal landscape. Contest participants have until December 14, 2012 to submit on www.sharetheexperience.org. Who knows? Perhaps an upcoming visit will result in an award winning photograph; an image that could be on a future National Park and Federal Recreation Pass.

Receive a burst of creativity through an eccentric experience of the park. Enroll in a National Park Photography workshop, for example, one focused on Arches and Canyonlands National Park near Moab Utah.  Twenty five 2013 photography workshops are organized by individual professional photographers with special permits to illuminate tips and tricks of photography using the gorgeous settings in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Investigate the 2013 workshop dates for preparation to enter the 13th Annual Share the Experience photo contest; perhaps shooting the winning snapshot to get on the 2014 federal park pass.

Motorcoach Tours provide a sensational aperitif to national park discovery. Over a segment of days group tours by bus have an entire pre-decided itinerary, someone else drives to maximize sightseeing, and tours regularly come with an energetic, knowledgeable tour leader. A dozen businesses feature a circuit of National Park stops to include Arches and/or Canyonlands National Parks for the 2013 travel season from April through October.

For the travelers who prefer to do-it-yourself, recreation.gov provides a single point in which to find a combination of federal interagency recreation activities and reservations. Use this technology to reserve camping in the Devil’s Garden Campground of Arches National Park or the ranger led hike in the Fiery Furnace. For backcountry use in Canyonlands National Park, reservations are completed directly with park headquarters in Moab Utah. Initiated in 2012 are availability calendars for 4 wheel drive use of the Maze and Needles Districts, backpacking in the Needles District and camping on the White Rim Trail.

There remains one more free fee set of days over the November Veterans’ Day weekend to visit one of the 397 areas set aside for the National Park System as an invitation to capture spontaneous images recreating in a national monument, national park, historical or cultural site, forest or grassland, or federal recreation area. Watch for Free Fee Days that the National Park Service may post for 2013 to organize a self-guided tour of any one or many of these areas. Of course, Arches and Canyonlands National Parks welcomes a visit.
