Moab Nature Photography, Landscapes and Night Photography Workshops 2014

Red Rock Photography of National Parks Workshops for 2015

All year photographers put on workshops highlighting various aspects for students to learn. Among the lessons are techniques of landscape, sunrise, sunset and night shoots. Winter is no stranger to tripods and cameras. Winter is nearly sleep friendly because of the winter hours of sunrise and sunset. There is something quixotic to huddling in the cold winter months anticipating that ethereal light soaking the Red Rock landscapes of Moab, Arches, Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point.

Well below, is last year's line up of 2014 Photographers and links to the workshops offered in Moab over the year previous to 2015.

Of course, local experts like Jon Fuller, Eric Odenthal, Mike Coronella, Lee Bridgers, and Bret Edge are available throughout the year in Moab for photo tours. Find them among other Moab tour providers on http://www.discovermoab.com/tour.htm.

SkyWest Airlines Will Provide Utah Flights between Salt Lake City and Moabin 2014

SkyWest Airlines Selected to Provide Essential Air Service at Canyonlands Field-Moab
The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) notified Senator Orrin Hatch today that SkyWest Airlines was selected to provide subsidized Essential Air Service at Canyonlands Field at the Moab Airport under a two-year contract.  Dianne Browning in Senator Hatch’s office writes, “We are thrilled that community impact was heeded in this selection.  Senator Hatch was pleased to be of service during the selection process.”
Proposals from SkyWest, Great Lakes, and Boutique Airlines were submitted to the Essential Air Service Division, Office of Aviation Analysis of the USDOT in August of this year.
SkyWest Airlines, operating under legacy carrier Delta Airlines, plans to use 30-passenger, pressurized aircraft. This larger capacity aircraft will undoubtedly provide increased enplanements at Canyonlands Field.  SkyWest’s proposed schedule includes service to Salt Lake City, and plans are for 12 round trip flights per week. The official schedule is yet to be determined.

The Grand County Council and the Grand County Airport Board believe that SkyWest Airlines has the reputation to restore confidence in the community to use and recommend commercial air service at Canyonlands Field. Community support for SkyWest Airlines has been overwhelming and positive.

The transition from Great Lakes Airlines to SkyWest Airlines is expected to take approximately 60 to 90 days.

Ski Moab? Winter Mountain Biking

Moab Winter – Skiing, Hiking and Travel
The Visitor Center at the Island in the Sky, Arches National Park, Dead Horse Point State Park, downtown Moab and the Thompson Springs Welcome Center off of Interstate 70 are open seven days a week in winter. There is winter backcountry use in the La Sal Mountains. Ski trail information is detailed on DiscoverMoab. . The 2014 Southeastern Utah winter has started out strong with a few earlier snowfalls than ordinary. Traveling to Moab this Winter? Here are some travel tips.
Currently Rim Cyclery will rent cross country ski equipment and snowshoes. The store, Gearheads, rents snowshoes. The bike company DreamRides is prepared to lead cross-country skiing in the La Sal Mountains. The bigger draw, even in winter, are Moab’s nearby parks. The snow in Arches National Parks has been melting more readily than Canyonlands National Park’s Island in the Sky District. The Island in the Sky is higher than Arches National Park by approximately 1500 ft elevation. Keeping feet warm and dry is an important reminder and tip. Having along ample socks to change out of wet socks will increase comfort, if a visit coincides with a winter snow day in and around Moab Utah.
Over the Thanksgiving holiday in Moab (2013) there were snow conditions. Some hiking trails required holding hands to steady hikers in spots. As conditions warmed up, 4x4 and bike trails became soft and muddy. Please be advised motoring or biking on soft, muddy trails causes significant trail damage. With the advance of colder conditions, trails will be solid and out door use resumes. Carry sufficient supplies in the event of delays in the backcountry.
When winter has not blanketed the Moab Valley, winter will certainly be aloft in the La Sal Mountains and the surrounding passes used to travel to Moab. Using Wunderground.com’s website, scroll down the page to find the History & Almanac box. Use this tool to research dates of prior years for the most informed understanding of winter driving conditions. Coming from the west along Interstate 70, research Salida, Utah; approach from the north research Price, Utah; from the east look into Vail, Colorado; then from the south check the conditions of Monticello, Utah. These locations are at elevation and experience more winter conditions than in Moab.
Ski Resort visitation does not decline with winter driving conditions. So daring drivers, consider blazing to a new destination this winter. Experience two amazing National Parks and a state park that is equally breathtaking and use modern technology to help source a travel plan. Remember to bring boots! www.DiscoverMoab.com

Utah's Mighty 5 National Parks and Fee Free Days up Ahead

free fees on the horizon

Two fine companions Utah’s Mighty 5 and Veteran's Day Weekend.  Veterans' Day Weekend has been designated as Fee Free Days during November 9 - 11, 2013. This applies to entrance fees only. Fees for camping and tour reservations will still be charged. Utah’s Mighty 5 is a focus of the Utah Office of Tourism to feature southern Utah’s five National Parks: Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.

Sequester cuts shall not be readily apparent to the public visiting the Mighty 5’s Arches and Canyonlands National Parks of Moab, Utah, superintendent Kate Cannon assures. The Southeastern Park Service Unit has been conscientious of budget for a number of years. The Superintendent of this region has run a trim program. The practice to redistribute duties to cover the Southeastern Unit of Bridges National Monument, Hovenweep National Monument, Arches National Park and the three districts of Canyonlands, rather than immediately refilling positions has been one strategy to cut the required 5% mandated by Washington D.C.

For more value in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, join the 2013 Artist in the Park, Sarah Hamingson, from April through November as she mingles with visitors at view points, sharing her love of pastels. Don’t be surprised if she hands out paper and colors to share the inspiration of a park view. Most of April Artist in the Park dates are organized to meet in Arches National Park.

The Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park is the most convenient to visit from the Moab area and in conjunction with an Arches National Park visit. Daily Geology presentations are provided at the Grand View Point at 10:30 and 11:30 AM. A short Ranger lead talk is offered at the visitor center daily too.

Horseshoe Canyon ranger lead hikes on Saturdays only in cooler fall months. Departures are scheduled from the West side trailhead at 9:00 AM to hike to the Great Gallery. It is a seven mile round-trip requiring five or more hours to hike. Be aware there is also 750 feet to descend in the beginning, which has to be climbed out of at the end. This ranger trip is limited to 20 people. Hikers must bring ample amounts of water. No water is available at Horseshoe Canyon, part of the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park.

Can't make it in November? Stop by August 25th for Park Service's Birthday or National Public Lands Day September 28th. In fact, help clean up the graffiti on some of the trails in Arches National Park! Meet at 9 am at the Arches National Park Visitor Center. Bring a lunch, sunscreen, water bottle and gloves. Breakfast, snacks, water and supplies will be provided. Plan to volunteer through 4 PM and give back to the park in this generous contribution of your time.
